Dear Tracy,

This time last year, Yorm Bopha was in jail, sharing a prison cell with seven other women.

Yorm, a housing rights activist in Cambodia, had raised her voice when thousands of her neighbors were forced from their homes to make way for new development at the former Beoung Kak Lake in the capital Phnom Penh.

She took up a microphone and led activists to stand up in resistance. In September 2012, she was jailed on false charges, alleging that she had planned an assault against two men.

Yorm was released in November 2013 after authorities received nearly 253,000 letters from Amnesty supporters across 54 countries in support of her case.

Join Write for Rights this year to fight for prisoners of conscience who need your voice.

Last year, I decided to write in support of individuals like Yorm because I know firsthand what it's like to feel like there's no way out.

I grew up in a neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where it was commonplace to hear gunshots or neighbors fighting. I learned early how important it is to stand together with others if I want to make a difference.

Writing letters last year alongside so many others reignited my commitment to dignity, justice, and human rights - and it changed my life. That's why I'm asking you to commit to joining me this year.

There's work to be done, and it's an honor to be writing with you this year. Together, we can change the world.
