Kidnapped, beaten and jailed: Liu Ping needs your help

Kidnapped, beaten and jailed: Liu Ping needs your help

Dear Tracy,

Liu Ping is a factory worker who became an activist after she was forced to retire from the iron and steel plant where she worked in China.

She decided to speak out through peaceful activism. Now she's a target of the Chinese government. In June, she was sentenced to six and half years for "provoking quarrels and stirring up trouble," "gathering a crowd to disturb order in a public place," as well as "using an evil cult to undermine law enforcement."

Help us win Liu Ping's release and the release of other peaceful activists. Make your first donation to Amnesty now and your gift will go twice as far through our December match challenge.

Plus, when you make a donation of $50 or more, we'll send you an Amnesty t-shirt you so you can start a conversation about human rights wherever you go.

Liu Ping's activism began in 2009, when she spoke out against her employer and won more compensation for herself and other laid-off factory workers.

Next, she tried to become a candidate for the local People's Congress, but she and her supporters were harassed, and eventually she was disqualified from running.

Then, she turned to one of the most politically volatile issues in China today: leaders' wealth. She publicly called on officials to reveal their fortunes. After holding up a banner calling on officials to disclose their assets, she was arrested, tried and sentenced to more than six years.

Amnesty is pressing the Chinese government to release Liu Ping. Liu is the subject of a global letter-writing campaign, and Amnesty is mobilizing our global movement of more than 7million people to speak out on her behalf. We must raise the profile of her case to win her release.

Liu Ping's daughter worries for her mother and says, "I'm afraid she'll be beaten. It's happened before."

Please stand with Liu Ping. Make a donation to support Amnesty's efforts to free her and other prisoners of conscience. Until December 31st your donation will be matched.
